Can anyone import and export commercial goods?
Importers and Exporters must be registered with The New Zealand Customs Service and the Ministry for Primary Industries.
Any person residing in New Zealand or any legal Identity with a New Zealand address can register.

What duty is payable on imported goods?
Duty rates vary depending on the Tariff Classification of the goods, the country of origin and export, and the availability of duty free concessions. We advise our clients on these matters prior to importing.
Is GST payable on imported goods?
GST is payable on commercial goods and the amount is calculated as 15% of the sum of the customs value + the cost of insurance and transportation to New Zealand + the amount of any duty payable.

How do I avoid problems when importing and exporting goods?
Accurate and complete documentation is the key. An invoice, a packing list, and a Waybill, are the core documents that are always required to import or export goods. Other documents that are usually required include a wood packing declaration and a container quarantine declaration. These documents should always be available prior to importing or exporting.
Is it necessary to use a customs broker to clear my goods?
Yes. The benefits are huge for a very reasonable cost. The customs clearance system requires access to EDI systems and software that cannot easily be accessed or used without specialised industry knowledge.
Should I insure my goods?
Yes always insure your goods. We can assist you to obtain marine insurance cover.
